When advertising is bad for business

Not all advertising helps increase sales. ‘Bad advertising Unsells a product,’ observed David Ogilvy. It erodes brand’s value as well.

Not advertising is far safer bet than bad advertising. Why pay to lose sales?

If Mr. Modi were to heed this advice, he’d refrain from doing any more election rallies. The more he speaks, the more he’ll be harming his own and his party’s interest.

Why?

Because he’s completely lost the plot. He’s sounding like a demented old record, stuck on two songs: desh ki security and the ills Congress may have committed half a century ago. Neither, I believe, are election issues. Voters can see how hard he’s trying to avoid facing them on real issues.

  1. I turned out to be completely wrong. The two issues turned out to be critical for voters. So advertising was bang-on strategy, helping Mr Modi demolish opposition.
